Introduction

This one year course is taught using a range of digital video cameras and Apple Mac computers. Students are taught a range of skills including scripting, storyboarding, camera skills and editing skills etc. There is one group project in the whole course. Outside of this, students work on individual projects in which they are encouraged to produce videos on topics of interest to themselves, provided it fits within the given brief.

The majority of this course is practical rather than theory based, which allows students to produce varied and substantial portfolios.

  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent
  • Successful completion of interview
  • Applications from mature students will be considered

Duration

This is a one year daytime course. Students attend three and a half days per week and are given video and paperwork to complete outside of classtime.

Students must complete and pass 8 modules in the one year in order to receive a full level 5 certificate

Career Opportunities / Further Studies

This full level 5 certificate facilities entry to the Multimedia , Level 6 course in Kinsale. It also facilities entry on a competitive basis to a range of third level colleges.

Robert Monoghan, completed this course in 2010. He is now attending the Dublin Institute of Technology, BA Art course( level 8), on Shirkin Island.

Rose Neenan, completed this course in 2009. Rose is now working towards a level 8 Degree in Fine Art, at The Crawford College of Art & Design.

Both of these students had artistic skills which they had developed prior to attending this course. In both cases they wanted to develop their technical skills in harmony with their creative skills. This they achieved in Kinsale and the full FETAC certificate along with the excellent portifolios which they produced here helped them to gain entry to their present courses.

Facilities in this Department

This department contains the most up to date hardware and software. Students on this course are assigned their individual Apple Mac computer, which they can work at all day everyday that they are in class.

Facilities include wireless Apple Macs, wide screen G5s, a range of digital video cameras, still cameras, scanners, sound recording equipment, music/soundtrack production equipment, colour and black & white laser printers and ink jet printers. We have a green screen animation room, in which students can produce stop-motion animations, with the option of mixing them with live video. 3D computer animations can also be produced using Cinema 4D.

Software includes; Cinema 4D, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Flash, Toon Boom Studio, Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, Microsoft Office.

Interviews

These take place in mid May,and again in the first week of September.

Notes

  • For full FETAC Certificate, Communications and Work Experience are mandatory.
  • Students may select from different Course groups.
  • VTOS, BTE and 3rd level grants available.
  • Study in Kinsale and avoid city traffic.
  • Public transport available from Cork.
